ABOUT

Xizi Wang’s practice centres around organic materials, exploring the fragility of life and the objectivity of time. Her work reflects on the absurdity inherent in existence—where time remains unshakable, yet its traces manifest sensuously through material transformation. She investigates subtle yet profound processes such as corrosion and disappearance, alongside more overt cycles of rebirth, seeking a dialogue between the natural and the artificial. Traces serve as evidence of existence, carrying memory, emotion, and the imprint of time itself. By preserving, erasing, or altering these marks, she questions the objecthood of what time does to material, and how presence and absence are perceived, recorded, and remembered.

Alongside her material investigations, Xizi holds a deep interest in social and psychological tensions. Her work attempts to capture fractures within both individual and collective consciousness, revealing the hidden strata beneath the surface of daily life. She is particularly interested in how emotion shapes our perception of time—how moments can dilate or contract, and how memory sediments into form. Through the transformation of materials, she evokes overlooked feelings and memories, rendering the passage of time as both a visible and tactile presence.

Her practice is driven by a desire to give form to the invisible processes of existence. Each trace left by time becomes a quiet testimony to the paradox of being—where decay and renewal coexist. Drawing on existential and nihilistic perspectives, she recognises the absurdity of seeking meaning in transient matter. By transforming fragile imprints, she creates spaces where viewers encounter their own memories and vulnerabilities mirrored in material traces, reflecting on how these fleeting marks connect us to the uncertainty and absurdity of time itself.
